APU Nordic Ski Center Intermediate/Advanced Junior Program (ages 14-20)

The APU Junior Team is for skiers who are striving to be strong junior racers on a local, divisional, national, and international level. The APU Nordic Ski Center is focused on age appropriate development. We encourage athlete education, proper training, and above all, a passion for the sport of cross country skiing.

The Junior Team is focused on training for competition and share the goal of improving. The team meets 5-7 times a week in the summer, fall, and winter. In the spring the team meets 2-4 times a week. Depending on age and ability, athletes are encouraged to train in addition to organized sessions. Self initiated training is a valuable component in development.

Great opportunity to learn from World Class skiers! APU currently has some of the best skiers in the US and the world. Occasional training will be in conjunction with the APU Elite Team (Ranked #1, 2, and 3 in the country!).

APU athletes have access to great facilities. Facilities include a private weight room, administrative ski office, and a team room for waxing skis, gear storage, and video analysis. APUNSC is fortunate to operate the Thomas Training Center located on Eagle Glacier above Girdwood. The center provides the unique opportunity to ski during the summer months. The elite team has on-snow camps every month during the summer and at times, advanced junior athletes may be invited to the camps.

The Junior Team will have two groups. One for advanced and one for intermediate abilities, (A team and B team.) Both groups will meet Monday through Friday (five days a week) at 8am and occasionally on the weekend. After the first few days of training athletes will be assigned a group and be placed with an "intermediate" or "advanced" designation. The advanced or "A" team will have a second strength session on Friday afternoons at 4pm.

Session Options

Year round Session (April 23 to April 13)

The year round session is a great option for juniors committed and serious about the sport of cross-country skiing. The year round program includes:

  • Year round coaching
  • Training Plans and Athlete Training Log
  • Training Camps: Hatcher, Summer Dry Land, etc
  • Race wax and support for Besh Cups, Anchorage Cup, Super Tour, and World Junior Trials.
  • Regular communication with personal coach, including training planning, ski advice, goal setting, etc.
  • Video analysis and testing
  • Year round athletes are the only junior athletes that may receive an invitation to attend summer on-snow camps at the Eagle Glacier Training Facility.

Spring Session (April 23 to May 27)

  • The spring session is designed for athletes who want to continue training after the winter race season. Spring usually highlights spring skiing and an "activation" training where athletes work back into running, biking, and other training activities.

Summer Session (June 1 to Aug 17)

  • The summer session is for athletes who want to train for skiing over the summer. Activities include running, bounding, roller ski, bike, and strength training. Training will typically be at Hillside, Kincaid, Potter, and APU.
  • Example of summer training schedule:
  • Monday, 8am: double pole speed, bounding and strength at APU
  • Tuesday, 8am: Interval day, bounding.
  • Wednesday, 8am: distance, roller ski.
  • Thursday, 8am: distance, run.
  • Friday, 8am: roller ski intervals.
  • Friday, 4pm: running/strength at APU
  • Saturday: Occasional Saturday OD (over distance) hike, run, or roller ski.
  • Depending on the age and skill level of the athlete double sessions may be recommended. "Doubles" are a second daily training recommended for the afternoon. Typically afternoon sessions will be on-their-own or with friends/teammates. Currently, there is one organized double session planned for Fridays.

Fall Transition (Oct 1 to Oct 30)

  • Fall session fills the gap between the end of running and the beginning of skiing.

Fall/Winter Session (Aug 27 to April 13)

  • The Fall/Winter session is for athletes who wish to train and race from the fall through the end of the winter. Training is focused on dry land ski training, classic and skate skiing, and "on-snow" camps (Hatcher Pass, etc). November to February is geared toward racing; APUNSC will offer weekend training, camps during holidays and in-service days, race support at Anchorage cup races, Besh Cups, Junior Olympic preparation, and communication via training logs, emails, and meetings with coaches.

We look forward to your participation in our program!
